Advised by Doug Scott at Rhode Island School of Design.

Xerox printed and sewn.
For this independent project, my collaborator Anita Huang and I, under the guidance of Doug Scott, created three publications that explore the concept of aesthetic taste in the art world. Each of the three publications feature essays written by distinguished art critics on the topic of taste and different institutions that hold the power to judge in the art world.

01 - FUNCTION OF THE MUSEUM

Dan Buren, a French conceptual artist recognized for his work related to the function of museums, explores traditional museum spaces and their role in framing public perceptions of art. His essay, Function of the Museum, critiques the neutrality of museum spaces and instead advocates for a more contextually and socially aware framework for work to be presented.

02 - WHY HAVE THERE BEEN NO GREAT WOMEN ARTISTS? THE EXCERPTS

Linda Nochlin, an American art historian specializing in feminist art history, dissects the societal and institutional obstacles that have inhibited women from garnering equivalent levels of recognition and success as their male counterparts. She posits that the scarcity of celebrated female artists is not a reflection of their talents and capabilities, but rather a consequence of systemic patterns of discrimination and exclusion; this discernment calls for a reexamination of the art world on a fundamental level.

03 - OUTSIDER ART: MADNESS, MARGINALIZATION, AND EXPLOITATION

Jonah Queen, a web editorial writer, published an article called Outsider Art: Madness, Marginalization, and Exploitation where he discusses outsider ar, an unconventional genre that rarely intersects with the traditional art world. Outsider artists operate outside of the traditional art realm due to their informal technical training, unconventional circumstances and conditions, use of discarded materials, and idiosyncratic subject matter.
